It is said that the last lines of this text were written clandestinely by Alexander Berkman and passed to friends who came to say their goodbyes at the Ellis Island Deportation Station. On December 21st, 1919, Berkman, Emma Goldman, and 247 other alleged immigrant anarchists and radicals swept up in the Palmer Raids were forced onto the USAT Buford and deported to Russia during the first Red Scare. This was their "good-bye message" to America, with renewed relevance over a century later.
